Note
|
He had a workshop in Odense where he (and his team) carved religious statues. His largest surviving piece is the pulpit in the church in Odense, Denmark. There are examples in the museum in Copenhagen. Claus Bergh was a very close friend of the queen of Denmark, she lived in Odense on Fyn, while the king mostly lived in Copenhagen, and she awarded him work in churches, specially on Fyn, but there also is a beautiful piece in a small beautiful island called Ærø (worth a visit too) In the history books he is presented as”the most gifted wood carver in northern Europe at the time”. The altarpiece in Odense Domkirke (it is easy to find on internet) is first carved in wood, and then covered with gold. Wikipedia entry at:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claus_Berg He still has a small street in Odense named after him, Claus Berghs gade. He has work in Øster Vrå, Bregninge, St Knuds and Sanderum in Odense. |
